What does that mean for you?

Legal tender is an official money category. Being outside that category does not by itself mean owning bitcoin is prohibited. It also does not mean a shop has to accept a Bitcoin payment.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains crypto-asset use, risks and registration checks. Whether a particular service or activity is permitted depends on the facts and the rules that apply where you live.

Can you picture an example?

Imagine a shop agrees to accept bitcoin for a purchase. That agreement does not turn bitcoin into official Canadian currency. It also does not remove the tax implications of spending it.

What should you remember?

Use the official guidance below and the securities regulator for your province or territory for current details. A business registration is not a promise that your money is safe. This general explanation cannot decide your legal situation.
