Why does Bitcoin's price change?

Bitcoin's price changes because the amounts buyers and sellers are willing to accept change. Its supply rules do not fix what someone will pay for it.

What does that mean for you?

A quoted price describes an exchange, not an official value set by the Bitcoin network. People may change their minds about its usefulness, risks or how much they want to hold.

Different services can quote different amounts and add their own costs. A displayed price alone does not tell you the amount you would receive after fees or a spread.

Can you picture an example?

Imagine you look at a quote, then return later and find a different amount. Your bitcoin balance could be unchanged while its quoted value in dollars has changed. The units held and the exchange quote are different things.

What should you remember?

A limit on supply does not create a minimum price or guarantee demand. This explanation offers no forecast. Learning how a quote works does not require you to trade.
