Can Bitcoin be hacked?

Bitcoin is not a promise of perfect safety. Attacks on a device or service account, stolen keys and attacks on the network are different problems with different consequences.

What does that mean for you?

The network checks payment approvals. If someone steals the information needed to make a valid approval, the record cannot know that the person using it is a thief.

A service can also suffer a security failure without the whole Bitcoin network failing. A headline about stolen crypto-assets does not by itself explain which part was compromised.

Can you picture an example?

Imagine harmful software copies recovery information from a device. Someone may then spend the bitcoin using valid keys. The payment history can keep working even while the owner suffers a loss.

What should you remember?

Keep keys and recovery words private, protect devices and understand who controls access. Avoid absolute claims that a system can never be attacked. This guide does not give odds, describe attack tools or promise a recovery.
