What does it actually hold?

The useful distinction is between the record and the keys. The public record tracks amounts that can be spent. Secret keys let a wallet make an approval, called a digital signature.

A wallet can also show a receiving address and payment history. An address can be shared to receive a payment. A private key or recovery phrase must stay private.

Is it like a purse?

A key ring is a closer comparison. Imagine changing the key ring you carry. The building does not move into it; the keys give access. In the same way, restoring wallet keys does not move bitcoin out of a broken phone.

The comparison has limits: someone who copies a spending key may be able to spend too. Keeping the secret information private matters as much as having a copy for yourself.

What about an account with a service?

If a service holds the keys, you rely on it for access and withdrawals. If you manage the keys, you take responsibility for their safety and recovery. A login password and a spending key do different jobs, even when the screens look similar.
